Sandalwood Essential Oil: Uses, Benefits, and Precautions
Sandalwood Essential Oil for skin halth, emotions, and more, via SustainableBabySteps.com
Sandalwood essential oil (Santalum album) is derived from the steam distillation of the wood from the sandalwood tree. It’s woody, and earthy aroma is incredibly grounding and rich, but not overwhelming. Its chemical makeup varies from Hawaiian Sandalwood, and it’s obviously not from Hawaii. Its sustainability is also starting to drop off, so Hawaiian Sandalwood will hopefully become a more eco-friendly replacement.
Therapeutically, it’s most often used for healthy skin, the nervous system, and muscles and bones. Sandalwood is also an oil high in sesquiterpenes, a naturally occurring chemical compound found in certain essential oils, known for having a positive impact on health and wellness, particular in regards to the brain. It is one of the oils with the capability of passing the blood brain barrier, a necessary component to supporting cellular health. But it’s probably the emotional wellness and aromatic influence that is more widely known.
Promotes healthy, smooth skin
Reduces the appearance of scars and blemishes
Frequently used in meditation for its grounding and uplifting properties
Sandalwood oil is widely known for being a spiritual, sacred oil, used around the world during practices of prayer and meditation. Perhaps this is because of the way the oil impacts a busy mind, calming thoughts and anxiety or worry, allowing a person to relax into a peaceful state, let go of their own mind/ego, and slip into presence (especially when applied over the forehead, the prefrontal cortex, which is your worry center of the brain).
Sandalwood essential oil blends well with Cypress, Frankincense, Lemon, and Myrrh. In addition to sandalwood essential oil, also consider trying Frankincense, Patchouli, and Ylang Ylang.
